2007 Dodge Caliber, 2.4, has had a really rough idle for better part of 6 months. Codes for 2 evap leaks, catalytic inefficiency, and oil pressure sensor. Also, gascap light.
But here’s what my wife has done so far:
Replaced intake manifold gasket (which needed replacing as it had worn through in several spots).
Purge valve solenoid replaced(didn’t fix evap or gascap light).
Radiator hose exploded few weeks ago, but completely replaced hosing and purged, no issues with temperature.
Vapor leak detection pump replaced (evap codes cleared and have not returned, gascap light off) After this the car ran well and didn’t have the idling issue nearly as bad for about 3 weeks.
Throttle body cleaned thoroughly during manifold gasket replacement, as well as connection between plate and engine block where the gasket is. Tested with carb cleaner and no rattling or shuddering occurring.
Until recently. It used to shake violently at idle (in drive, when in neutral rpms stay more consistent) but now it feels like a power surge or drop, the rpms dance up and down, with shuddering. No misfire codes. Turning on the fan at idle also puts load on the engine. Power definitely seems to be dropping during shudders and will cause light dimming.
Also going downhill ( coasting)causing a burning smell, not from brakes.
Aggressive acceleration causes smell of fuel, and shuddering when accelerating from stop.
Help us out so we know the next step (OPS or Catlytic).
BrianHonestly… I’m kind of impressed that you’ve managed to keep a 2004 Caliber on the road this long as it stands. Replace vehicle is definitely the recommended fix.
But short of that, what codes exactly? Has any actual testing been done, or have you just been throwing parts at it, hoping for the best?
DaveDo you have an actual scanner, or just the code reader that the parts uses?
If it doesn’t present with other codes, then I would examine the engine/trans mounts carefully.
Sometimes an engine can feel like it’s running rough when in actuality you’re just feeling more vibration because the rubber isolation inserts in your engine and trans mounts ate destroyed, allowing the powertrain to lay on the subframe.
TomBump for attention.
