Any idea on why my 2014 Honda Civic shakes for about 30 seconds when I start it up?

Hey, quick question — anyone know why my 2014 Honda Civic feels like it’s having a mini earthquake for like 30 seconds every time I start it? It’s like the whole car’s doing a weird shaky dance before it chills out. Is this normal, or is my ride trying to tell me something? Could it be the engine? Bad mounts? Cold start drama? If you’ve been through this, drop some wisdom — I’m all ears!

Check your spark plugs, air intake, and motor mounts. It could be any of those.

Honda tech here. Does it buck at about 2500-3000 rpm? Those 1.8s like to tear their air inlet pipes and can cause some crazy running issues by letting in unmetered air. A lot of guys mistake it for VTEC solenoid issues.

            Maybe a cracked motor mount.

If you unplug your up stream o2 sensor, does it do the same thing?

The o2 sensor doesn’t work when the engine is cold, though, so that test may not prove anything. The o2 sensor doesn’t work until it reaches about 500deg. Nor does it work at wide open throttle. Only between those two times it trims fuel. WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, THE COMPUTER RUNS ON A FUEL MAP THAT’S PROGRAMMED FOR COLD RUNNING.RICH

Could be coolant leaking into a cylinder overnight and when in clears out the CYL comes to life. Get it hot and park it. In the morning, pull the plugs. Hold a piece of cardboard over the plug holes and crank it. If there is a wet cylinder, it will blow the coolant onto the cardboard. If It’s clean, then not a coolant issue.

Manifold air pressure sensor maybe or mass air flow sensor.

My guess is older engine getting oil to the lifters, I’d change the oil and switch to appropriate weight synthetic oil and see if this changes it.

2011 fiesta, same thing. I was thinking fuel pump bleed off. Try to cycle the key 5x. Or so before starting.

I have a 2018 Acura, and it does the same, like someone is cradling my car and gently shaking it.

If there’s a check engine light on, then it’s maybe nevermind from the throttle positioning sensor mass air flow sensor.

If it doesn’t do it the whole time, then I doubt it’s the motor mounts. You would feel it all the time for that I would say and spark plugs. I don’t know, you got over 100,000 mi on it yet.

Pull a spark plug and let’s have a looksie.

Could be a couple of things. Dirty fuel injectors or change spark plugs.

One of the spark plugs is misfiring. It is easy to test and easy to fix.
