Hi all. I need a bit of advice. I am planning on changing timing belt on my 2010 1.6 TDCi @135k on the clock. I’ve noticed recently that the car sounds a bit rougher when starting, which I believe is caused by hydraulic lifters. I am tempted to buy cheap new lifters and cam shaft on eBay, but I’m not sure if they are any good or would it be a waste of money? Any advice is welcome.

Too cheap, it’s probably made of toffee, change your cam belt kit, do regular oil and filter changes with a good quality oil. With maintenance, it will run forever.

In general the price you pay is the quality you get for filters, yes a 20$ filter may fit in a 200$ filter spot, but it is not the same thing. Prices may vary, but anything less than 10% of a cost somewhere else is probably junk. I’ve been on a dozen service calls to replace Napa filters that part numbers crossed over and fit, but would not allow things to work properly.

No. Don’t. Unless it’s worn, you won’t need a camshaft. And o don’t know how much a shadard camshaft would be for that engine, but I really don’t think a can on its own should be that cheap.

Try an oil change first, and you don’t need to get a cam shaft, if you go to a shop that does car parts, after market will be at a responsible price.

Camshaft is not a wear item, shouldn’t need to change it unless it’s been damaged by something else.

Don’t waste your money on cheap eBay crap. Do engine oil changes more often and use higher quality products, that will get you further. As diesels wear on, they change sound. I got mine at 270,000km. Now it’s at 430km, runs good, doesn’t sound the same as it used to.

Changing cam/lifters is a sound plan, if they’re noisy. You’ll already have done 90% of the work.

Buying cheap isn’t the way to go.

You would need to buy timing tools as well. It may be that the timing belt tensioner needs changing as well, and with the old belt it may have slightly slipped out of time. Get a timing kit and make sure it’s all properly in time when you do it.

Everyone saying don’t buy a cam from eBay because they are cheap junk. Don’t listen to them I needed a cam for a Nissan Hardbody in 2019. Bought one from eBay, installed it, and it’s still going strong till this day and the truck is drove daily. I buy a lot of parts from eBay and have never had an issue. Been using parts of there for the last 15 years or so.
