How to tell when it’s the battery, starter, or alternator when trying to crank a vehicle? 17’ Ford Explorer, go to crank it and the lights and everything comes on, but it’s like a ticking noise and won’t start up.
JohnTest it…
Without testing, there’s only the elimination method.
Check and clean all connections especially the grounds.
If you don’t know, the battery history might be time to just replace it.
Then check the starter.
But “clicking” is usually the starter solenoid switching. The solenoid contacts internally could be bad, the main power cable from solenoid to starter may be bad or armature/windings are bad.
TonyStart with battery ck first.
StevenHit it with a jump pack and try again.
DavidAVR test. Alternator voltage regulator.
KevinHard to say I personally would throw.
A new battery, the easiest solution if no.
Start still check starter.BrendonGrab a jump box and give the battery some juice, then try again.
KevinThe only job of alternator.
Is to keep battery charged while it’s running if.
Alternator failes normally.
Vehicle dies while ruining not a no start. -
