Do I need an O2 sensor and an oil change? Can I survive a 6-hour car trip in a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer?

Change that oil, prior. O2 not critical, but the oil is.

Oil change is an absolute must, it’s critical to change it when it’s due at least if you care about the longevity of your engine, if it’s the upstream O2 sensor leave it, it won’t matter, downstream could cause some issues as it measures your air and fuel mix, both should take an hour to do.

It’s an 04 Mountaineer. 21-year-old vehicle. What’s the worst that can happen? Go for it! You have road side service number on your phone?

You are more likely to blow the transmission on it than anything. The 4r75e isn’t the best trans. O2 sensor should be fine, check your oil, if it’s black or smells burnt, change it. If it looks clean and smells like oil, you should be OK.

Need oil change? Like it’s already been 10k, or it’s low? Or your barley over. Details 02 sensor meh.

Make sure the oil level is fine. I would check it everytime you fill up the gas tank. Bad O2 sensor will cause bad fuel mileage.

Have the oil changed or change it yourself, it doesn’t cost much at all and is very easy to do. The O2 sensor can likely wait, however just like anything else, everything will be fine right until it isn’t. If you don’t trust your vehicle, get a rental car to make the trip.
