2005 Toyota Corolla. Is it possible to pump down the AC refrigerant before I replace the expansion valve and evaporator, or do I need to do a full evac any time I have to replace a part of the AC system?

Also, my low side was reading high (75 psi) and my high side was reading low (90 psi). Compressor and clutch are working. Compressor and condenser are two years old. Air is cold when driving fast, but warm when driving slow. I’m guessing the expansion valve is stuck open.

The automotive places will do a free diagnosis, but they made it sound like it’s as basic as hooking up the gauges and telling as much as I already know.

If it takes more investigating its $145. Recommendations?

Evac and recharge. Get it evacuated at a shop. Replace the expansion valve and get it recharged.

The full evac is after the system is opened to remove moisture. Recovery/repair/evac/recharge in that order.

Presuming you have gauges of your own… to verify if the compressor is viable:
Engine running – A/C engaged – Manifold gauges connected: Temporarily clamp the suction hose (the bigger one) 8-12″ from the compressor for 10–15 seconds. The high & low side should increase, as you’ve created a restriction.

Do a temperature test with your hand while the system is operating. You may be able to find the problem that way.

Also, I believe the expansion valve, while it may be behind the firewall is accessible at the firewall.

I may be wrong on that. I’ve been retired for three years and I forgotten more than I remember. And yes, go to a shop to recover the refrigerant in the system and find out actually how much refrigerant was in the system. Then after repairs are made, evacuate/vacuum at least 40 minutes, an hour is better. And be sure to add a little oil to the recharge to save your compressor.

                That looks like compressor problems.
