I have a 2017 Subaru Outback. We got a p0420 code in my car. I bought the o2sensors & brought it to my mechanic to replace a wheel bearing & ask him about the o2 sensors & the cost. He checked codes & he said I need a new catalytic converter. So my question is this— how many do I have? When I try to look up parts, I get so many pieces. Is there 1 piece that it most likely is? I’m so confused.

My symptoms are, engine light is on & I have absolutely no power going up hills. Otherwise, it runs fine. My converter has been rattling pretty much since I bought it, but was told that was normal for a Subaru.

Do you also take your own meat to the butcher?

You can either diagnose and do the work yourself, or get someone else to! Don’t be a MISER!

You might try some catalytic converter cleaner in it before you give in and spend the big bucks. I’ve had mixed results with it, but it sometimes works.

There is nothing In a catalytic converter that should ever rattle.

Just an FYI – there should be a difference for California or federal emissions, make sure if the car has California emissions you put a California cat or else your check engine light will come right back on.

Try running a few tanks of marvel mystery oil in the gas.

OK, here’s what u do if u can’t afford a converter. Take it off and dump out what is left of the converter. Break it all up and get it all out. Then reinstall Into car and get a pair of spark plug spacers for the rear pair of o2s. Should be good to go for a while.

Two things that will cause what appears to be a good running engine on flat level ground, from having power either going uphill or when you gun the engine to take off, are a clogged catalytic converter or a bad fuel pump/clogged fuel filter.

If you do, the cats replace the oxygen sensors as well. It’s a good chance the rattling was the cat breaking down and is probably stuck in the muffler.
