While replacing the spark plugs on my 2005 Toyota Corolla, I noticed that two of the four ignition coil bolts no longer tighten in their respective holes. I used a thread chaser to discover that the threads are basically gone or off in the holes. My question is what method do I use to make new threads? I saw the tap method, while someone else used a tap and helicoil method.

Update: I used the helicoils and got the two bolts in. Thanks everyone.
DavidHeli coil would be the strongest. A little easier and cheaper way would be to go up a size and tap it and put new bolts in it. The boss doesn’t have much meat on it. Sometimes going to a standard bolt instead of metric will keep you closer on size and is easier to find.
PatrickKeeping tabs on this, got an Aveo with a stripped thermostat housing mount hole and I jb welded it. Been 3 days and still holding with no leaks. But would definitely love a better longer term solution?
KaiI would use an insert like helicoil.
MichaelShove a small piece of wire into the hole. Tighten bolt until finger snug. Done. The coil experiences almost no forces. You might knock this loose by jumping the car in a derby.
TylerTap and a bigger bolt will work, the hole is fairly big on the coil compared to the hole in the valve cover. If not, use a timesert instead of a helicoil if there’s enough material there to do so.
JamesPut a little JB Weld on the threads, run a bolt in hand tight, let it cure, tighten it up. Some light oil on the bolt will keep the JB Weld from sticking to the bolt, or you can drill and retap
UlfThread insert of any kind you like, I’d use Helicoil style because I have them.
El BrujoI’d just go next size up and drill and tap, and get the correct size bolts from hope depot or something. It’s quick and easy.
GerryUse a standard thread bolt and cross thread it. Probably not the proper way, but it’ll get you by in a pinch.
SeanOn my own car I’d probably just slap the coils back in there and go on about my day, lol as long as they don’t use the bolt hole as a ground anyway. Pretty sure those do not, so yea just send it.
