Hi, I’m trying to remove a wheel to replace a leaking rear axle seal. What can I used to remove this lug nuts that are rounded? 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 with 135,000 miles.
JakeCould you use a chisel or dremel to create new flat sides, so the socket will grab? If it’s weldable you could weld a non stripped nut to it.
SteveParts stores sell special sockets to remove damaged / stripped lug nuts.
Harbor Freight also sell them.
JustinYou’ll need to replace the lugs after (but you should regardless of how you get them off), but you could either use extractor sockets or use a 12 point socket that is *very slightly* smaller than the size of the socket. Hammer it on, then get off with rachet. You’ll need to hammer out the lug from the socket, and it’s easiest to do that if you have a bench vice.
AdrianHave you tried hammering in 18mm socket?
RobertWhat does the mileage of the vehicle have to do with the situation you are having?
MatthewA socket and hammer. Also, a lugnut remover.
JohnHammer a smaller impact socket on it.
RobYou will probably have to change the bolt as well as the lug nut being overtightened would have damaged it.
DanielHammer a smaller socket on it. For example. If it’s a 18mm nut. Hammer a 17mm on. Make sure it on there good. Then go to town. Been a while since I’ve had to do that.
TravisHeat it up and pound a small socket that you don’t care about on. Might not get the socket off the lug afterwards but should work.
PatrickIf you can’t get that off, you may want to pay to have the seal fixed…just sayin.
RobertThere are special sockets.
I’m not sure what they are called. -
