I haven’t had anything done in my 2007 Toyota Highlander, 4 cylinder, FWD for a while. Now, I want to get my front control arms, inner and outer tie rods, and all four rotors and brake pads replaced. I also want to get the rear sway bars replaced. This is what a mechanic quoted me. Is this a fair quote, just for the labor:

      • To replace inner and outer tie rod, it’s 450.
      • Sway bar links. 90
      • Front rotors and pads… 150
      • Rear rotors and pads… 150
      • Control arms it’s a big job, it’s around 8 to 10 hours to do it.
      • I can do 750 for the control arms.
      • I can do everything for 1200

Also, for the sake of money, if I just get either inner and outer tie rods OR control arms replaced, is it going to affect the other components? My understanding is it’s better to get everything replaced at the same time.

P.S. He is a good mechanic in terms of expertise and located in Dallas. If that matters.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Price seem pretty fair, does that include alignment and are parts separate.

Those control arms don’t take that long. 2hrs max a side. If you live in Texas, that should be a simple job. I live in Canada, a couple hrs north of Toronto, Ontario. We get rust and rot. The repair procedure is to drop subframe to replace arms.

If you have a transmission jack and a little know how, the arms come out very easily.

Especially is there is no rust.

There’s a wide range of price and quality with auto parts. Online comparisons for price won’t do you any good. If you trust the shop, then do the work.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Why do you need pads and rotors? What’s wrong with your control arms? Are your tie rods loose?

As far as the control arm, they call for 8+ hours, my best tech used to be able to do it in two each side.

Okay so you’re getting them done, but is there anything wrong with them now? Do you hear clunks?
