11 Camry LE 2.5 L I’m getting P0420 code and the recommendation is replacing catalytic converter. Might be the PCV needs replacing. There was some oil loss from maximum to minimum level since May. About 2500 miles. I looked underneath and almost no oil stains around the engine. A very small amount, like 2 inches across on one side. A tiny bit on one side of the top valve cover. None on garage floor. If it’s burning oil, how can I tell? A mechanic said oil additives could help. He also said a scan of the O2 sensors is needed, and he’ll do it for $45, and I could take that live data and look it up on the internet. Said yeah, the cc needs to be replaced. What would you do?

PO240 is not a cat code. Did you mean to say 420?

You can buy a o2 sensor spacer and it might fix your cat code. Its worth trying. Don’t forget to put the spacer in downstream sensor tho. It’s ver unlikely that o2 sensor would cause the code, it’s usually the cat itself

I’m not saying it will help nor have I ever tried it, but they do make and sell catalytic converter cleaner’s. I‘d try that first and then if needed to be put in a factory one.

Change your spark plugs first, I don’t know how many cats I have saved from changing the plugs. The old plug tend to not create the heat needed for efficiency.

Start with checking ground wire connections. If it looks rusty or corroded, probably is. All these electronic sensors and such need good grounds!!! I don’t mind helping you spend you money so I can make more, but it may not cost as much in parts as you think!

I’d be willing to bet thay the cat is partially plugged from burning oil, I’ve seen this countless times from this set up. If u pull the front o2 sensor out in the Maniverter and shine a light in the hole or pop a bore scope in there u will see your answer I believe

A bad (or cheap) O2 sensor would contribute to a clogging converter. I’d replace the cat, put in a good sensor & clean or replace the PCV valve and get the oil leaks fixed before they get worse if you plan on keeping the car. Unless you’re planning on trading for a new car, it’s called maintenance. Take good care of your vehicle and it’ll be dependable. That stuff is all related. When you get up there in mileage an oil treatment additive every oil change and a decent fuel system cleaner every other tank, or 6 months does help maintain fuel economy, cleanliness, power and reliability. I’ll use a fuel treatment on a long trip. It doesn’t do as well on a grind of short commutes. It’ll also give you a better ownership experience for the vehicle. It sounds like you’ve got a decent mechanic, and you’ve kept up on your vehicle. Your Camry will probably love you for it.

1 qt. at 2500 miles (or even double that) isn’t going to hurt your Catalyst. Most manufacturers tput that up to 1 quart every 1,000 miles is normal and acceptable. If you are getting a P0420, 99% chance you need a converter. If you use aftermarket, you’ll be lucky to get 6 months, if it works st all.
