Hey, quick question—what’s the real deal with Subaru? Is the Forester actually as solid as people say, or is it all hype? I’ve heard mixed things, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth the investment or just another Instagram darling. Like, is it the ride that’ll have your back through all seasons, or am I gonna regret not going with something flashier? Hit me with the truth—any experiences, good or bad?
JonathanPatricia Normand The non-turbo, non CVT version is good. You need to know what you are getting into for upkeep though.
If you are not one for keeping a disciplined oil change and recommended maintenance schedule I would suggest another brand.
The boxer engine in these will not let you cheat like a Toyota or Honda will.
If you keep on top of them, though, fantastic cars.
JoanI’ll forever run from Subaru.
EricConsumer reports recommends the Subaru Forester i. The top 5 year after year.
LarryCVT transmission suck and they arnt rebuilable at all. If you’re trying to get a subbie make sure it’s manual or has a real automatic with gears at least they are rebuildable some CVT transmission don’t even last 50 to 60k that roughly a year or 2 of driving and 3 to 5k in repair.
ThaliaNon turbo manual Subaru’s are absolutely reliable that’s why I have one as a daily alongside my turbo ones. I’ve got customers that run them and are actively trying to kill them, but they won’t die — the older scoobs are pretty much bulletproof just watch out for rust.
JohnThe Mr. Subaru YouTube channel has a lot of good information.
MemoreeI have owned a forester since 2013. Bought used 2011. No problems except one: it burns extra engine oil. So I need to tip off the oil in between changes. I’ve found it needs less oil when I went back to using regular cheap oil and not synthetic. I’d buy the same car again though.
ChrisDon’t buy used. They are a mechanic’s car, cult following, high maintenance.
AlexanderI love my Subaru. Majority of them are exceptionally reliable. Do try to avoid first gen CVT if you can. They work but die around 150k. Fuel economy is great for road trips and I love the handling of Subaru’s AWD.
JoeA bunch of comments on the CVT. 2014-2018 had a warrantee extension to 10 years/100K miles due to a known issue. 2019+ the CVTs have been very reliable.
2019 till now uses the most current engine (non-turbo models), the FB25D. This doesn’t have the concerns of previous years.
Make sure it received regular service. The boxer engine doesn’t take well to those who don’t keep up on their oil changes last the 6K mile service recommendation.
