This is below my front passenger side headlight (2015 Ford Escape). If you zoom in to what’s in the blue circle, you’ll see a section in the shape of a baseball home plate that’s cut out. Is that supposed to be there for some reason, or is it just broken? It’s not on the driver’s side. I thought it was broken, but the more I look at it, the more I see that it’s very symmetrical, and looks like it might be an access point of some kind. This piece moves a little when I pull on it. Does anyone know what it is?

Pretty sure that’s where to tow hook goes.

It is, in fact, a tow cap. Behind it is a threaded portion where a tow insert can be screwed in. I work at a body shop and remove them all the time when the wrecker drops vehicles off for repairs.

It’s a removable plastic cover. Behind the cover is a threaded insert where a tow hook is supposed to be threaded when you need a tow onto a flatbed, out of a ditch, etc.

Somewhere in your vehicle, probably under the rear cargo area, there should be a doughnut tire or patch kit, a crappy scissor jack, and one or two tow hooks.

So far, I haven’t seen a complete answer. If you pop that cover off, what you will find is a threaded hole. What goes in the threaded hole? In the trunk wherever your jack and spare-tire kit is, there is a threaded eye-bolt (unless it’s been misplaced). You thread it into the hole, and now you have a tow point that won’t damage the car.

There’s a tow hook in the truck with the spare. That piece pops out, and you screw the tow hook into the threaded bung that is behind the plate…to be pulled out of a ditch or whatever.

Removable cover for eyebolt to thread into for recovery point if vehicle gets stuck in mud/sand/snow I’m guessing
