Delete if not allowed—Need advice from experienced mechanics and technicians. I’m going to be starting as a lube technician with Ford soon, and they don’t provide tools. What tools should I buy to start out when on a budget? Thanks for any help!
WatiYou won’t need a lot of tools they should supply a lot of the specific tools to fit some vehicles but to help you out you would need:
1/ Socket set 1/2”
2/ Full set of spanners metric 4 mm – 24 mm
3/ Set of pliers
4/ Set of screws drivers
5/ Make friends with the Mechanics to borrow anything you don’t haveBrianBasic sockets and wrenches to start. And a 1/2 impact gun with deep impact sockets.
If you’ve got a Harbor Freight nearby, that’s the place to go. If not, find Gearwrench or Tekton on Amazon.
SteveDon’t be afraid to buy Harbor Freight Pittsburgh or Icon tools. DO NOT GO INTO DEBT WITH TOOL TRUCK until you have a stable tech position.
RobGo to harbor freight buy a 3/8 socket set, 1/4 socket set, a couple ratchets, a set of extensions, an oil filter socket set, a 3 jaw grabber style for the really tight ones, a plier style filter grabber cuz it’s faster when you have room for it, along with a set of screwdrivers, set of pliers, and a set of torx sockets.
A 3/8 or 1/4 small battery impact driver for zipping off under trays will save you time too.
RobtimusAsk them to rent you some tools for a short term. Figure out which ones you actually use and start buying your own out of your paycheck, while paying a small loan payment.
