What causes the mass air flow sensor to act up? I’ve changed mine and is still reading it on my dash and acting as if I didn’t change it, it’s a 2014 Nissan Altima SL.

Your intake boot is probably broke.

Always provide the DTC code “Hex Number”
          (ie, P0102.)
when asking a engine control question.
Take that MAF back and get a OEM, Nissan MAF…
They are very particular about these.
Look for any unmetered air leaks in the intake air boot.

Is the MAF actually acting up though or is it doing it’s job in letting you know that there’s an issue with the amount of airflow it’s detecting?

Carbon build up on throttle chamber plate or air leak.

Any wiring loose– poor connection it will not work measure correct airflow — too many people assume the code says a part is bad & this is false — one must use the code testing chart to verify problem with a circuit & then one can fix trhe issue-
