I have a diesel Toyota RAV4. 2010, DCAT model. It has done 160k miles. For some time it has caused intermittent large clouds of light grey smoke from the exhaust. The smoke is very dense and hangs in the air and doesn’t dissipate easily.
The smoke appears under gentle accelleration such as pulling away or going up a hill. If I floor, it is stops.
I thought it was the DPF trying to regen so had it professionally cleaned. It will now go a few days with no smoke and then make up for it with clouds and a long stream before again stopping for a while.
I have had the injectors tested. All 4 are over fuelling, which I know will need sorting, but I don’t think will cause the big puffs of smoke problem.
I’ve checked the turbo and there’s some residue in the intercooler pipe, but not excessive. I did find a small pool of oil in the turbo as per pic. I don’t know if this is normal?
I’m at a loss as to what is causing these large clouds of smoke. Any ideas?
