2015 Kia Sorento EX. Alternator keeps being fried. Have had 6 new alternators in the last 3 weeks, replaced wires. What could be the cause of this? 130k miles.
OscarI suppose I’d start with checking your ground.
ChrisRan into this problem before. After diagnosing and noticing the electrical connector from the PCM to the alternator was seeing everything like it should, replaced alternator.
Did this 3 times from different local parts stores.
Threw a Hyundai alternator on it and all went well.
Never again will I put a “generic” alternator on a non-domestic vehicle for this very reason.
JoeyI have seen an alternator on a Sedona get fried due to a valve cover leak. Whole side was covered in oil, refused to replace alternator without valve cover gaskets.
Another possibility is a bent pulley somewhere, causing the belt to put stress on the alternator pulley.
JoeyTest your battery. May have a bad cell.
BrentIf nothing is actively leaking on alternator, test battery and replace alternator with OEM.
Find out if it is PCM regulated and check all alternator data on scan tool.
If all good, start load testing the wires on the connector.
Peel back alt to battery cable insulation looking for corrosion at the ends.
MatthewUse an OEM alternator.
WilliamSomething is wrong with the ECM. Have it scanned with a good scan tool and look at the output of the alternator. Make sure it isn’t overcharging. I would bet there is an issue with the ECM.
CopacabanaYou are unlucky, your car doesn’t like aftermarket electronics. Try a Kia alternator. I don’t see them often, but they do happen.
TracyPut a fusible link in before changing alternator, my a/c compressor was causing the issue with mine.
JeremyMost likely the battery. Alternator is probley running constantly. And burning out.
CodyFirst, I would make sure it’s not the battery causing it to fail. Have the battery tested. Also, most vehicles nowadays require OEM alternators since aftermarket electronic parts don’t work.
