Hoping someone can shed some light here. 2018 Malibu 1.5 turbo.
About 6 months ago, the car grenaded the VAC pump and threw the cam out of time after a couple days of losing power steering and brakes with the “reduced engine power” message.
Thankfully I was able to get the cam back into phase, and it didn’t destroy anything as some do, replaced the pump, tore the engine down, cleaned it all out, and it’s been fine.
Fast forward to now, we got the p2138 code with complete loss of power and the “reduced engine power” warning for the accelerator position sensor.
It’s a recall that I was aware of, took it in to GM, had it replaced.
The first new one lasted 5 miles.
Same thing happened.
All power gone, reduced power warning, p2138 code.
Alright, take it back in.
Tech said he thinks it was a faulty part out of the box, swapped another new one.
This one made it 20 miles.
GM is at a loss, cannot figure it out, it’s been through 2 dealers at this point and no one has a clue.
The only code it has confirmed and current is the p2138 code for that part.
Both were new GM parts.
There’s no way 2 of the same parts failed within 30 miles of eachother, but I can’t even begin to think of what could be causing this.
The car has 90k on it and up to this point hasn’t been much of an issue, despite the poor notoriety of these malibus but has been hell over the last 6months-a year.
I’m open to ANY recommendations at this point.
If it were up to me this car would be in the scrap at this point, but it’s not mine, it’s my fiancé’s, and she can’t afford to get another new car at this point.
I drive an older 09 Honda accord and it runs like a top.
I now get why everyone shits on the new GM junk.
MichaelRunning a diagnostic on it via LD would have done good before.
Don’t know how well that will work now unless a tech is willing to sacrifice the time to replace, rerun and fail out a part to figure out why it keeps happening.
In my opinion, I’d start checking the relays, not just hard parts.
Something may be burning out, and the first replacements may have not been the issue.
Without being in front of it or having done any diagnostic myself, I wouldn’t be able to say.
RustyP1238 code is fuel pump secondary circuit. See it often on gm. Needs a fuel pump driver module. Or you stated the wrong code.
TerrenceYou need to have the whole electrical system tested, find a shop that does that and pay them.
NealThrottle body motor could be bad. Code means the signal between accelerator sensor and throttle body sensor is wrong.
