Hello all – Gauge suddenly started sticking at 160 and the fan turns on from the second the key turns over until anywhere from 5 to 30 min after driving.

Check engine light just came on as well. I’ll get her into the shop soon, but any ideas?

        Thermostat/coolant temperature sensor.

Temp gauge is either bad, or thermostat is sticking open. When the ecu reads faults in the coolant system, fans always come on like that. Should be classified as an engine coolant temperature fault or coolant flow efficiency fault. Something along those lines. Not a terrible problem to have. Will get you to the shop for repairs.

Sounds like the coolant temp sensor that controls the fans are stuck on so the truck can’t warm up.

Possibly thermostat but most likely coolant temp sensor.

If the sensor is burnt out, the circuit is open/shorting. The computer doesn’t know what the true temp is, so it keeps the fan on at all times to be safe.

We had a issue with the battery in our work truck 2016 Silverado it actually had the same symptoms not saying it’s the answer, but we had a bad battery, and it wasn’t putting out 14 volts, and we replaced it, and it quit doing it with the gauge and the fan quit staying on but if that doesn’t fix your issue then definitely a thermostat or coolant temperature sensor

Thermostat housing. Temp sensor is integrated. The computer is commanding the fans on at all times because it has detected a potential overheat condition. Once the part is swapped and codes are cleared, those fans won’t be on all the time. Just had the same issue on a 16 Yukon last week.

Mine did this. Changed coolant temp sensor, and that worked for about a month. Then changed the thermostat and it completely solved the issue.

I’d change both. Less than 100 bucks to do them both and about 20-min job.

Thermostat stuck open we change them all the time it’s a common problem on the gm product, pretty simple job tho.

Year, Make, Model, Engine Size and Mileage would help.

Sounds like a problem with the Temperature Sensor or Thermo Fan Switch.

Check for open circuit in coolant temp sensor circuit. Open usually reads -40 degrees, which in newer stuff the computer recognizes that’s not a likely situation so it plugs in a default temp and turns on the light. In older systems it would add fuel for 40 below and if it didn’t flood out, it would run extremely rich and misfire badly. Pull the codes.

If the check engine light is on, you have a problem with your coolant temperature sensor. If the gauge is down, it might be just the thermostat and there is a small possibility of cluster failure. If you still have heat inside of your vehicle, your thermostat is good.

Be sure to use only GM genuine thermostat.

Do you have normal heat, feels as hot as normal?
Suspect thermostat stuck open, maybe coolant sensor.

Hmmm I see a lot of answers on here about the thermostat stuck open. The cooling fans stay on is the complaint, with a coolant temp of 160deg. I just learned that a thermostat stuck open will keep your cooling fans on….NOT. Check the coolant temperature sensor as someone has said.

Thermostat and coolant temp sensor need changing. This happened to my truck.

Thermostat. Just did it in our Acadia at 47k miles. GM has some really crappy ones.

I just fixed this on mine, try changing out the thermostat. You’ll need more coolant too as I lost about a gallon of coolant during the swap.

Most likely the thermostat is stuck open check the lines to confirm and replace with only ac delco same case if it was to be the temp sensor instead of the thermostat ac delco only

If it doesn’t move off from 160 at all, then it’s probably a bad coolant temperature sensor. If it moves up a little bit from 160, then it’s probably a coolant thermostat.
