My Ranger won’t stop chirping!–> 2003 Ford Ranger Edge | 3.0, 2wd, low mileage, North Carolina.

Spent today changing out pulleys and belts to get rid of my ranger’s chirp, only to find that nothing helped.

I replaced the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, changed the belt twice (first belt didn’t do right, had to get a better belt) and then I just replaced the entire tensioner assembly because I thought I’d get a fix.

I took the belt off a minimum of 10 times today, and I’ve checked all the pulleys for any weird movements or and catches.

      Nothing.

I drove about ten miles without it squeaking after all the work I did today, and as soon as I got close to home it started again.

I’m losing my marbles here, someone help!

You can use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope. Be super careful, you don’t need a screwdriver lodged in your ear. But if you find a long piece of metal, screwdriver, breaker bar, ratchet extension, you can put it on the bolt of each pulley, and it will help you hear what that specific pulley is doing.

Check your cam synchronization, it’s basically like an old distributor drive that drops down in the motor if it does it with a belt off chances are that’s your culprit.

Does it chirp with the belt off? I’d be using a stethoscope on all the pulleys to confirm 100%. Just because they feel OK doesn’t mean they are.

Does it have the dummy distributor in it. Those have been known to make a chirping noise. Take cap off, spray some lubricant down around the shaft. See if it goes away

Does it have the dummy distributor in it. Sounds like a bird in there. Take cap off, spray some lubricant down around shaft. Let sit for a little while. Had a lady friend with Ford Taurus. Had a chirping noise, that what it was.

Check alternator and AC compressor, Run it for minute without the belt.

Been down this road before, replace your cam position sensor and the oil pump drive under it.

Camshaft synchronizer is a common failure it speaks like a belt.
