Hello mechanics! I went to go see a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan SE earlier today at a dealership with 110K miles on it. While J was test-driving it, I heard a loud “whooshing” noise upon acceleration.

The best way I can describe it, is we had actually thought a window was cracked open, but realized it was not the windows and instead coming from in front of us underneath the hood. We did mention it to the dealership, and they’re having someone look at it tomorrow.

I was just curious if anyone may have an idea of what it could be?

I’ll attach some more details below.

      • Vehicle: 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan SE
      • Mileage: 110K
      • Price: $6,255 before taxes, fees, etc.
      • Engine: 2L I-4 gasoline direct injection, DOHC, variable valve control, intercooled turbo, premium unleaded, engine with 200HP
      • Transmission: 6-Speed Automatic with Tiptronic / All-Wheel Drive
      • Fuel Type: Premium Unleaded

Could be a wheel bearing if it was kinda like a roar/whoosh.

Sounds like a boost leak from the turbo or excessive turbo noise due to wear etc. real hard to diag thru a post. Tho!

An 11-year-old German car with over 100k miles is a project car. Expect to be putting a LOT of money and time into it to get it running well again. Do not buy those cars if you’re looking for a reliable daily driver.

Turbo noise. If you can hear it, there may be a leak somewhere; they usually do their best to make turbos quiet.

Those cars blow out the rear main seal all the time. Stay away!

Turbo spool and/or watergate. Have you or currently drive a turbo powered vehicle? My Silverado makes a whistle sound from the turbo. It might be something different to you.
