Need help. My son’s car will keep the fan on about 10 minutes after shutting the car off and removing the key. It’s never done this before, and it was doing this throughout the winter in really cold weather. I tried replacing the fan relay and draining and swapping his coolant but, no luck. Could it be a bad thermostat? Or any other ideas? The car is a 2012 Ford Focus. Thanks in advance!
ChrisMy guess is probably bad thermostat or coolant temp sensor.
WayneI would say it’s a bad coolant temp sensor. You should put it on a scanner and monitor what the coolant temp is showing.
JohnGrab a scan tool and check coolant temp. If the sensor reads high, then the fans stay on. Might need a water pump or thermostat if t Stat is stuck closed.
JoeIt’s probably thermostat or coolant temp sensor if no other issues.
JonWhat about the fan itself. Is that bad? I’ve replaced a few over the years. Fan itself was having a fit internally and not letting itself shut off. IDK just a thought.
AnthonyRun the codes more than likely u have a p0128 which is the thermostat not regulating to PCM preset parameters if you clear the code it will shut the cooling fan off like it is supposed to, but it will likely reset the code again. If it does, replace the thermostat.
Martin“It’s never done this before, and it was doing this throughout the winter in really cold weather”. read that and see if it makes sense.
PaigeMake sure you don’t have any coolant leaks in the system. It might not be circulating enough coolant, causing the thermostat to shut off, so the fan runs to prevent overheating. This happened in my Ford F-150 after inspecting thoroughly I found a coolant leak due to a cracked reservoir. The cooling system needs to be under pressure and sealed to have circulation and proper heat transfer.
JamesMy quad does the same thing, it’s a thermal coupling connected to a relay designed to protect the engine from overheating after shutdown
Does the temp Guage indicate a problem?, has it ever overheated?BobCould be if it’s not the temp sensor. Fan Control Module: This module acts as the “brain” for the fan, receiving signals from the ECU and controlling the fan’s speed and operation.
BobThe thermostat is shutting its self off, my truck does the same thing, some days it does it and some it don’t. But it doesn’t let it over heat.
JasonI’m not sure what codes are present, but alot of the times the fan staying on is caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor
