2019 GMC Acadia Denali. I got an oil change at the dealership. Sticker says to come back after 5K miles. Owner manual says every 3K miles. Which one is correct? Thanks

I have always done 3k no matter what. I don’t care what they recommend. If you want it to last forever, you don’t do the bare minimum. Especially if the manufacturer is known for engine issues, I wouldn’t do less than 3k.

3k what don’t you use synthetic, mine says like 10k miles.

But I have an old junk car with a slight oil leak anyway, so I’m putting like a quart in a month, and it only holds four quarts, so I got a natural continual oil change going on.

That’s what GM tells the dealers to recomend. Should be full synthetic Dexos only. If you check your oil level regularly as you should you can go by the oil minder in the cluster to tell you when to change it. But with all the oil driven components low or dirty oil causes issues. I would go with the 5000 if it was mine.

A 2019 wants 3k oil changes? Very odd, manufacturers have been extending times due to government/EPA requirements. Like our 2023 Bronco is 10k.

Generally the oil change places want you back in 3k for obvious reasons. If you’re using the manufacturer recommended oil, go with the GM mile recommendations.

I do this with all our drivers and have never had an issue with oiling.

Race car and or tow rigs get services more frequently.

Full synthetic or conventional it don’t matter, I still change mine at 3,000 MI because especially if you have one of those extended car warranties they’ll look at it, and they go no you’re not changing it enough.

I work at a Buick GMC dealer, and we recommend 5k miles or 20% oil life. The dealers use 100% synthetic oil. It doesn’t breakdown nearly as fast as conventional oil. If you have that model Acadia with either a 2.5 or 3.6, they don’t have any real issues, and I’ve seen customers go above those recommended intervals without issue using ACDelco Dexos 5w30 or 0w20 respectively.

Recommended Oil change intervals are only designed to get you out of the warranty period, not for the longevity of the vehicle. The manufacturers and dealer’s jobs are to sell you another vehicle.

Manufacturers have changed to lower tension piston rings to decrease friction, but it also increases oil consumption and blowby. No way in hell would I go 5k miles or more without checking the oil level every 1,000 miles, or rely on the built-in oil life monitor.

If running full synthetic you can easily run 5k. Just keep an eye on oil level if it eats oil. If conventional oil, you can push it 3-5k. Again keep an eye on oil level.

I’d go with your owner’s manual. My car says 7,500 per oil change, so that’s what I do. Granted, I do my own work on my car, no matter what it is. With the exception of an alignment.

If it has only had synthetic oil, 5k is fine. If it has ever even had one quart of conventional oil. You should start planning the change at 2500 miles.
