I’m getting really sick of these A-holes on marketplace. Found 3 cars today all with rolled back odometers. One guy told me it was 60k original miles and never been hit. After getting the CarFax on it, it was smashed 4 times and the last known odometer reading was 93330 back in 2017. Why lie about it, we have the abilities to prove that they are liars.

People swap clusters all the time, you can’t always trust mileage. Techs also do typos all the time doing work I took my 23 ram to Valvoline for it’s first oil change only had 3300 miles on it the tech typed 33000 and was about to submit it, but I caught the mistake just in time, and it was corrected. I say if the car looks and drives as advertised, mileage means nothing. Especially on 15+ yr old cars.

They prey on stupid people an think it’s an advantage. That’s why I do only auctions. Especially rtto. Reasoning, I pay just around scrap price. I see what I’m paying for. When I sell, I’m not bound from prior shenanigans. They get what the get. Perfect world has been deleted ever since Presidents in the USA can have felonies an world Leaders can invade other countries with lame excuses of security. I’m scared!

Then go to the dealership and buy a brand-new car since that’s what you are looking for gonna pay 3 to 4 times what the car is worth.

Last year, I took my girlfriend to go look at this Toyota RAV4. Looked good and drove good, but the engine sounded tire, so we agreed on a price, but only if the CarFax came back clean. Well, according to the owner and odometer, it only had like 130k. Did the car fax and in 2017 the vehicle had 284k ^_^ showed the seller and we walked away. He was also surprised, or he really knew how to act.

A lot of them don’t mention things like rebuilt title or salvage, too. They’re hoping to get one person who doesn’t realize that it’s not a clean title like they put in their post. I ran into a few like that.

At least they went through the effort. The Lazy just put a newer year and lower miles on the ad for their “no issues” pos they bought the day before. It’s flippers trying to flip to flippers on marketplace, lol

I ran into that a few months ago, Russian guy. The car was incredibly immaculate, I was looking for a car for my college aged son. Tons of maintenance advertised to have been done. I had brought what I was willing to pay, and we went around and around I he beat me up to a couple hundred bucks more than I wanted to pay, but I figured I’d pay it. He drove me in the car to an ATM. On the way there I looked at the extensive stack of receipts in the glovebox. One receipt was 100k miles more than advertised on the odometer, and the receipt was a year and a half old.

I hadn’t originally run the Carfax like an idiot, the detail job was incredible. I’ve been detailing for 45 years, and it was as clean as if I took a good 3 days doing a show car. Carfax confirmed the mileage I thought it was. I confronted the dude about it, he had several stories. Ridiculous.

Man, I bought a 2010 Honda ridge line from Carvana with “80 something k” and didn’t catch the discrepancy till after the arbitration period closed. I genuinely hate crooks!

To be fair, sometimes these things happen during the prior owners time and the current owner doesn’t know and hasn’t pulled the CarFax. Not saying it’s the case here, but it sometimes happens.

In most jurisdictions, it’s a criminal offence to intentionally misrepresent mileage. Make sure the Bill-of-Sale you make the Seller sign has a separate, strong, odometer disclosure statement. Most scammers won’t sign it. That’s your signal to walk away. That being said, the best indicator of true mileage is the pedals. Also, a professional flipper doesn’t rely on Carfax to reveal accident damage. Learn to recognize the signs or take the car to a body shop for inspection. A paint thickness gauge works too. It is very common for accident damage to not be shown on Carfax. Most Bodyshops only report damage if the repair is paid for by an insurance company.

Brother, almost everyone is a bullshit artist. I just went through a nightmare myself with this. Looked at a bunch of box trucks, only to find out all had rolled back odometers. Finally purchased one with low actual mileage. I changed the oil after 4 days and had zero oil pressure at idle. They put an additive in the oil to thicken it up. Tore the engine down and all the bearings, crank, and cam were basically wiped. I’m almost finished now with a complete rebuild and between machining and parts, I’ll be in for about 4K plus my labor. I’ve been without a work vehicle for over 2 months now. People really can suck…

That’s incredibly frustrating! It’s a shame how some people try to take advantage of others. Always get a Carfax report and have a mechanic inspect the car before you buy it. It might cost a little extra, but it’s worth it to avoid a headache.

I’ve looked at thousands of ads around the Chicago area especially I can almost look at the ads now and see when they are a scammer and tell when the odometers are rolled back for some reason 99% of them are foreigners with really strange names then of course if you look at their ratings and go through them if they’re not 100%, it’s obvious what kind of weasels they are I’m looking for something where it’s an independent normal type person selling.

Bro. Horse-trading is as old as America, and it’s a big boy game. You win big boy prizes, or you get ur pants pulled down and your butt whipped. If *that* really gets you sick then you’re not cut out for big big games. Find a different hobby because this one’s not for you.
